Learn to Play and Tyke Programs 2024-2025
The LTP/Tykes program is focused on introducing the FUNdamentals of basketball. Both LTP and Tykes programs are non-competitive skill development based programs. Whether your child is brand new to the game, or a driveway ball fanatic, they will learn basketball skills, be introduced to game play, build character and have fun!
As with all Calgary NorthWest Basketball programs, all of our program coaches are VOLUNTEERS, please consider this when signing up your child(ren).

Practices / Games
- Each Session is a 1 hour practice/game
- We focus on skill development through “camp style” learning where some drills will be run with the entire group, then we will break into smaller teams for some drills, and then participate in short scrimmages.
- Our focus in these programs is skill development. Our game play will come in a variety of ways within the practice from, 3on2, 3on3 to 4on4 with variations from half court to full court depending on skill levels.
The games are to be fun with an emphasis on skill development and good sportsmanship.
Always remember that positive encouragement goes a long way to help the players improve their game.
Coaches
- Our LTP & Tyke programs are volunteer driven. With the age of players in these programs we require parent involvement to deliver a strong program.
- One team manager, one head coach and three assistant coaches are required for each practice time - these volunteer spots can be filled by parents, friends, relatives - anyone with a love of the game!
- We have one “Head Coach” for the group of up to 30 kids who acts as the main contact & organizer. Three assistance coaches are also required to manage mini teams of 8-10 children and help with gaps.
- We are always in need of coaches for these programs. If you are interested in volunteering your time as a coach please indicate this under “Player Requests” or email the LTP & Tyke program coordinator.
- Practice plans will be provided for coaches.
- Coaches who sign up ahead of time are guaranteed a spot for their child in the program. E-mail cnwb.ltptyke@gmail.com if you are interested.
Equipment Required
- Participants will need indoor running shoes, gym attire & a water bottle
- A basketball and T-shirt will be provided
Gym Rentals
- Please remember that we are guests in the schools and are ALLOWED TO USE ONLY THE GYM.
- Parents must remain in the gym at all times and siblings not playing must be supervised and not be roaming the halls
- Outdoor shoes are not permitted in the gyms, this goes for all adults and children. Bring indoor shoes if that makes you more comfortable.
- All of our gyms are in the NW of Calgary and we assign one to two gyms for the season but due to gym availability, this may change. The school gyms we typically use for this program are Collingwood, Captain John Palliser, Ranchlands, WO Mitchell, Arbour Lake and West Dalhousie.
